Where Science Leads

February 17, 2009

With less than a year left in its Where Science Leads Campaign, Penn's School of Nursing has been awarded a $1.5 million challenge grant from the prestigious Kresge Foundation.

The Kresge Foundation is a national foundation renowned for supporting communities around the world by empowering the nonprofit organizations that serve them.

"We are delighted that the Kresge Foundation has offered this challenge to Penn Nursing," said Penn President Amy Gutmann. "Penn is strongly committed to translating knowledge from the classroom to the community, and Penn Nursing exemplifies this commitment. We are grateful for this support, which will provide Penn nurses with even greater opportunities to improve health care in Philadelphia and around the globe."

Currently, Penn Nursing faculty and students are involved in several community projects in West Philadelphia. One such program that has attracted national attention is Living Independently For Elders (LIFE), now in its tenth year. LIFE has served nearly 700 West Philadelphia residents with limited financial means who want to remain at home rather than enter a nursing home.

Beyond Philadelphia, Penn Nursing's health care outreach extends to national and international projects in areas like New Orleans, West Virginia, Botswana, South Africa, and India.

Now at the forefront of nursing science, with world-class researchers, Penn Nursing is charting a course toward a stronger health care system -- educating tomorrow's leaders and creating evidence-based models of practice and policies that will change the face of health care.

This dedication to innovative research and community involvement, to education and practice, is what defines Penn Nursing. It is, quite simply, "Where Science Leads."

To receive the $1.5 million Kresge challenge grant, in the final year of its comprehensive campaign, Penn Nursing must raise $10 million by December 2009 to reach its $75 million goal.
