Tax and Gift Aid

For the benefit of our alumni and friends in the United Kingdom, Penn maintains The University of Pennsylvania (USA) Foundation Ltd. It is recognized both by the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and by the Charity Commission for England and Wales as a registered charity. Gifts made to the Foundation are tax-deductible for US taxpayers to the full extent of US tax code and may also provide tax benefits to UK taxpayers, including participation in the UK Gift Aid Scheme.

Under the Gift Aid program, the Foundation can claim tax on your donation at no extra cost to you.

• For gifts made before 4 April 2008, the Foundation can reclaim 28p on evey £1 donated. 
• For Gifts made on or after 4 April 2008, the Foundation can reclaim 25p and the UK Government will pay 3p (for a total of 28p) on every £1 donated. Please note that this "transitional relief" for the Foundation does not affect your personal tax position.

To qualify for Gift Aid, you must pay an amount of UK income tax or capital gains tax equal to any tax reclaimed.

• Use the Gift Aid calculator (bottom box) to determine the base donation you must give to achieve your total gift when Gift Aid is applied.

Legacy Giving

UK citizens can make a gift to the University of Pennsylvania in their wills by making the Foundation a beneficiary, potentially reducing UK inheritance taxes. You should contact the most appropriate advisor for you to explore further or contact the International Development Office for a referral. We encourage you to notify Penn of your intentions so we can acknowledge and steward your intentions appropriately.
