From Legend to Legacy: Gotham Book Mart Collection Goes to Penn Libraries

Open since 1920, the Gotham Book Mart -- famed New York City independent bookshop whose customers included Charlie Chaplin and Woody Allen, whose original location hosted such greats as Dylan Thomas and Salvador Dali, and whose collection included books from the personal libraries of Truman Capote and Anais Nin -- closed its doors last year.

New Board Chairman at Penn Dental Brings Global Perspectives

Dr. William Cheung (D'81, GD'82) was named the new Chairman of the Penn Dental Medicine Board of Overseers, effective October 31.

"I have always been passionate about dental education, and I'm honored to be working with the School and my fellow Overseers in this new capacity," said Dr. Cheung.

A Global Perspective

One of his goals as Chairman will be to help bring a strong global perspective to Penn Dental Medicine and the outlook of its students.

Gutmann Donates $100,000 to Support Students

Penn President Amy Gutmann and her husband, Columbia law professor Michael Doyle, have made a $100,000 contribution in support of undergraduate students at Penn.

The main part of the gift is designated for the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CURF), while the remainder is a five-year commitment to the senior-class gift program, Seniors for The Penn Fund.

Penn Endows Five New Professorships in Neuroscience

With a $50 million contribution from Penn's Health System, Penn is making a major investment in neuroscience. The contribution not only helps fund five new Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) professorships in neuroscience, it also supports interdisciplinary neuroscience initiatives involving the School of Medicine and other schools of the University.

John Gearhart, Stem Cell Pioneer, Named 8th PIK Professor

John Gearhart, who led a research team that first identified and isolated human embryonic stem cells, has been named director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and also a Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor.

Gearhart is the James W. Effron University Professor at Penn. His appointment is jointly shared between the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Animal Biology in the School of Veterinary Medicine.

In the final stop of our regional launch tour, Making History dropped in to celebrate with 200 alumni and friends in London on June 5 at the Landmark Hotel. President Amy Gutmann and Campaign Chair George Weiss, W'65, were on hand to raise a toast to Penn with Quakers in the United Kingdom. Though the launch tour has concluded, stay tuned - we'll be announcing programming for the upcoming academic year soon!

Renowned Applied Mathematician Robert Ghrist Appointed 7th PIK Professor

Robert Ghrist has been named the seventh Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ghrist, one of the world's leading applied mathematicians, will be the Andrea Mitchell University Professor. His appointment, effective Sept. 1, will be jointly shared between the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Department of Mathematics in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Anne and Jerome Fisher Make $50 Million Gift to Translational Medicine Research Center
