  • Alumni and Friends in the Windy City Celebrate Making History

    Making History swept into the Windy City on April 28, 2008 for a campaign launch event at the Fairmont Hotel. Nearly 200 alumni and friends came out to show their Penn pride and learn about the University’s exciting campaign goals. President Amy Gutmann and Campaign Chair George Weiss hosted the event.
  • Alumni Leaders Start Preparing for 2009 Reunions

    Even though Alumni Weekend 2008 is still a few weeks away, we're already planning for next year's reunion. On April 4 and 5, The Penn Fund and Alumni Relations welcomed over 125 volunteers from next year's reunion classes back to campus for the 2009 Penn Reunion Leadership Conference (PRLC).
  • Making History Heads to Miami for Campaign Launch Event

    Alumni and friends in south Florida celebrated Making History: The Campaign for Penn with President Amy Gutmann and Campaign Chair George Weiss, W'65, in Miami on March 10. Over 140 Penn people from the region attended, demonstrating that pride in the Red and the Blue stretches even to the southern tip of the country.   • New York Alumni and Friends Kickoff Making History at the TimesCenter

    In our largest regional launch event yet, over 600 New York-area Penn alumni and friends convened at the beautiful TimesCenter in Midtown to celebrate Making History: The Campaign for Penn. Attendees braved a particularly frigid and windy February evening to share in warm feelings of Penn pride with fellow alumni.   • Wharton Receives $5 Million Gift for Wharton Sports Business Initiative

    Julie Taffet Moelis, W'81, and Kenneth D. Moelis, W'81, WG'81, have made a $5 million gift to the Wharton Sports Business Initiative (WSBI), Wharton School Dean Thomas S. Robertson has announced. The WSBI is a collaboration among top business leaders, Wharton faculty, and students that generates and disseminates knowledge about the sports industry through educational programs, strategic corporate partnerships, high-level student consulting assignments, global outreach, and research.

  • Penn Receives Presidential Award for Exemplary Community Service

    The University of Pennsylvania was one of three schools nationwide selected to receive the Presidential Award for General Community Service from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The award, which recognizes Penn for its wide range of community service programs, was presented on February 11 at the annual conference of the American Council on Education in San Diego.
  • 220-Ton Cyclotron Arrives at Roberts Proton Therapy Center

    February 14, 2008
    Following a 3,700 mile trip from Belgium, PENN Medicine's new cyclotron arrived at its home in the Roberts Proton Therapy Center on January 29. The final leg of the journey required a 19-axle trailer with a police escort. The machine, which at 220 tons weighs about the same as a 747, accelerates atoms to near light speeds to create a tightly targeted beam of energy that can kill cancerous tumors without harming nearby healthy tissue or organs.
  • Penn's Endowment Breaks Into Top 10 Among Colleges and Universities

    According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, Penn's endowment finished the 2007 fiscal year in the top 10 among college and university endowments in the United States for the first time. Strong investment performance and generous contributions from alumni and friends fueled an impressive one-year increase of 24.9%, bringing the endowment total to approximately $6.64 billion as of June 30, 2007.
  • Campaign Co-Chair Chris Browne, C'69, Endows 5 New Professorships

    February 6, 2008
    Christopher H. Browne, C'69, has given the School of Arts and Sciences $15 million to establish five endowed professorships across the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences.  This is Browne's second gift supporting endowed professorships, a key priority for the School and the University.  In 2000, he gave $10 million to endow five chairs in SAS known as the Browne Distinguished Professorships.
