Continuing the Revolution in Medical Education: Penn's New Medical Education Space
The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has not only a long tradition of educating the physician-leaders of tomorrow but also the accompanying commitment to reshaping the educational experience. As medical students continue to move from the classroom to team-based educational approaches, to use new simulation technologies, and to work with actors to develop better physician patient interactions, new physical space is required. The School is now ready to build upon these recent advances by creating a new medical learning environment: one that takes full advantage of information technology as well as the strong collaborative relationships among Penn Medicine researchers and other members of the University community. This new learning environment will be integrated with existing facilities but will still provide Penn’s medical students with a world-class “space of their own.” This space will include areas that will enable students to easily transition from team to individual study – and at its heart will be two new information spaces, a technological hub for medical education. The School of Medicine is also collaborating with other schools at the University to fully integrate knowledge and help develop comprehensive solutions to health and societal challenges, and these collaborations will be advantaged by the new space as well. The School of Medicine aims to attract the most competitive students to its campus and the role of state-of-the-art, welcoming, and inspiring spaces in the creation of knowledge and exchange of ideas cannot be overstated in achieving our goals. education at the University of Pennsylvania. The new space will
physically unite School of Medicine programs and offer flexible new
teaching areas that encourage small group interactions. The Biomedical
Library will be transformed into an innovative information commons that
will support individual and team-based study. The vibrant and active
common area, based along Hamilton Walk, will reinforce the identity of
the School of Medicine on the University’s campus. Along with the
construction of an innovative, new translational research building,
Penn Medicine plans to complete the evolution of the medical education
space in 2012. View images of the planned renovations > Learn about gift opportunities for the Education Space > |
