Broadening Penn's Geographic ReachAttending Penn on a scholarship after growing up in North Carolina was "an astonishing, world-opening experience," for James M. Higgins, C'76, GAR'78,WG'87. "Although my contribution is small in the broad scheme of things, it makes a difference to its recipients, enables me to help the University broaden its geographic reach, and provides me with a window, through the eyes of the Betty I. Higgins Scholar, on the remarkable place Penn is today." Recipient Siler Bryan, C'11, is also from a small town in North Carolina where he was "surrounded by forest and not much else." With a gift for languages and "a joy in learning and discovery," he is studying to be a diplomat.
