The Priorities

Priority: Programs & Research
Goal: $909 million (26%)

As America’s first university, Penn has long been a leader in research capability. Each year, the University totals $700 million in research and development expenditures, and Penn is unique in its broad-based, interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching, with collaborations taking place among faculty and students from its 12 schools and more than 160 centers and institutes.

Penn has also been a center of curricular innovation throughout its history. With a breadth and depth of expertise in virtually every field, endless possibilities for joint- and dual-degree programs, a wealth of cultural resources, and a deep commitment to co-curricular programming, the University of Pennsylvania offers one of the most well-rounded intellectual environments anywhere.

Because of the scope of Penn’s programmatic and research endeavors, the support we seek for this priority is significant — comprising just over one-quarter of our overall campaign goal — and wide-ranging, with gift opportunities in nearly every school and center. Funding for priority institutes, interdisciplinary initiatives, curricular innovation, campus hubs, and many other projects across our schools and centers will sustain the intellectual and cultural dynamism for which Penn is renowned.
