In 2008, the School of Social Policy & Practice celebrated its centennial year, and the School is stronger than ever. There are new programs -- including exciting interdisciplinary collaborations with other schools at Penn -- new faculty hires, and more partnerships with local social service agencies and neighboring communities. After 100 years as a leader in social work education, SP2 continues to embody Penn's historical commitment to social justice.
UPDATE 2008: THE FIRST YEAR OF MAKING HISTORY Richard Gelles reflects on the first year of the Campaign and looks ahead... |
Last year's greatest fundraising triumph?
| | The commitment of our Board to the School's strategic goals to increase financial aid, attract and retain star faculty, and improve our physical space, as evidenced by their generous gifts and pledges. |
Biggest (and nicest!) surprise?
| | After 50 years, seeing plans come to fruition to position the school's entrance to face Locust Walk -- the hub of University life and Penn's main thoroughfare.
Most memorable moment?
| | Kicking off the School's Centennial celebration with keynote speaker Ralph Nader, hundreds of Penn students, SP2 Board members, and other friends of the School.
| Your main focus this year? |
| | Staying true to the School's mission to advance more effective, efficient, and humane human services through education, research, and civic engagement (especially in these trying times), with the help of our Board members, faculty, staff, and alumni..
What's most exciting about Making History?
| | To be almost halfway toward SP2's Campaign goal -- the first significant Campaign goal in the School's 100-year history!
