“THE ADMISSIONS ENVELOPE FROM PENN CHANGED EVERYTHING,” says Hoa Hoang, C’12, the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants and a stand-out student from one of Philadelphia’s most challenged high schools. In that moment, her dream school had become a reality: not only had she been accepted, but her years of hard work had been matched by a significant financial aid package. Little did she realize then that the support Penn offered her would go far beyond financial aid to include innovative University resources like PennCAP (Pennsylvania College Achievement Program). more about PennCAP Designed primarily for students from low-income backgrounds or who are the first in their family to attend college, the nationally recognized program works with students to address the realities they may face in adjusting to Penn. Through an array of academic and social supports offered from matriculation to graduation, PennCAP helps students like Hoa navigate the ins and outs of life at Penn and ensures that they have the confidence and sense of belonging to thrive once here. It’s all part of what we at Penn call “access” — opening doors to opportunity through bold initiatives that support extraordinary students. The result, for Hoa, and everyone at Penn, is a university rich in perspective and possibility. photo: Scholarship recipient Hoa Hoang, C'12, developed a passion for art history in her freshman year.
